Bayern Munich opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a seven-goal thriller against Manchester United. Bayern beat Man United  4-3 thanks to goals by Leroy Sané (28’), Serge Gnabry (32’), Harry Kane (53’ penalty) and Mathys Tel (92’). Rasmus Højlund (49’) and Casemiro (88’ and 95’) scored for United. The win against Man United set several records for Bayern.

The Bundesliga giants are now unbeaten in their last 35 Champions League group-stage games and have won 14 in a row. Both those runs are Champions League records. Bayern have also scored at least once in their last 41 Champions League home games. Furthermore, the Munich side has also won their last 20 Champions League opening fixtures with an aggregate score of 51-5. In fact, Bayern haven’t lost a game in the Champions League group stage dating all the way back to Sep. 17, 2017, when they lost 3-0 to PSG.

That record has catapulted Bayern to second place in the all-time Champions League standings. Only Real Madrid has collected more wins 284 than Bayern’s all-time 225 wins in the competition. Bayern, however, has done it in fewer games, averaging 1.99 points per game, which is slightly better than Real Madrid’s points per game average of 1.96.

Bellingham the hero – Becomes youngest Englishman to score for Real Madrid in the Champions League

Speaking of Real Madrid. The Spanish giants left it very late against Champions League debutants Union Berlin. It was not until the 94th minute that the Spanish side finally broke Union’s resistance and scored the 1-0 winner. Once again, Jude Bellingham was the hero for Real Madrid. Bellingham, aged 20 years and 83 days old, is now the youngest Englishman to score for Real Madrid in the Champions League. In fact, Bellingham became the sixth youngest player to score for Real Madrid in the Champions League (overview).

Bellingham’s goalscoring form has been impressive of late. The 20-year-old has now scored six goals and one assist in six games for Real Madrid across all competitions. Signed from Dortmund for an initial €103m, Bellingham has netted every 89 minutes for his new club and has been directly involved in 63.64% of Real Madrid’s goals this season. With that in mind, it is perhaps not surprising that Bellingham is the most valuable U21 player currently playing in the Champions League
